OnOne Software Perfect Photo Suite 6

It's here! Thursday I received my OnOne Software order of Perfect Photo Suite 6. I had previously used the PhotoTools 2.5.5 and loved it. I was also contemplating purchasing the upgrade to PhotoTools (Perfect Effects 3) but not the entire suite of software tools. The $300 price tag was just out of my reach. I was also anticipating a sale at some point and since most of my shooting happens in the summer, I was willing to wait.

Much to my surprise I was blessed with a sale much sooner that I expected and it was for the entire suite of tools. This excited me very much and I jumped at the opportunity. It's amazing the gifts God can provide you when you have patience. I now have Photoshop CS5 and OnOne Software Perfect Photo Suite 6, all for less than the original price of CS5. God is good.

I'm just now diving into all the amazing features of this suite. I think I'm really going to enjoy it. As a bonus, I still have PhotoTools 2.5.5 installed and all my custom presets intact. In the coming months I will be updating this blog with my experiences and tips. Stay tuned!

I know, I know. I keep going back to my Boulder Fall Festival images. I can't help it. I love capturing images there. It's so interesting and the people are amazing.

More PS HDR Pro

This time I tried HDR with a black and white twist. I also threw on my customer preset made in PhotoTools 2.5. I like the direction this one is going. I think the future of HDR imaging for me will be in black and white.

Photoshop CS5 HDR Pro

I haven't thought much about HDR images since I first tried it back in 2007. The fancy tone mapping look wasn't apart of Photoshop at that time and I wasn't extremely impressed. Add to it that I'm more likely to take images of people, for which HDR really doesn't work unless those people are sitting very still for the multiple exposures needed.

Fast forward to the current day and the new tone mapping functionality in PS CS5. I took a look at this tutorial and thought I would give HDR another shot. I used images from 2007 taken with my Minolta 7D. I think HDR Pro has some potential, but I definitely think I need more practice.

Yes, I know this one has been posted before, but I like it so much I wanted to try a different preset that I created using the PhotoTools 2.5. Again, there's a darker brown grain that you might not see in the smaller image. I like it, but as always, I'm still tweaking it.

Going back into some of the cool images I captured at the Boulder Fall Festival a few weeks ago. It might be difficult to see in this smaller size, but there is a nice brown grain happening. Still tweaking, but I like it.

Here's another shot at the look I'm trying to achieve. It's not there yet, but it's getting closer. This is a building in downtown Denver. I'm not sure which one it is, but the image was captured during the 'A Taste of Colorado' festival downtown this summer.

Update: Here's another try from the same set of images. I like the progress but something isn't working for me. I think it's the vignette style. I'm more of a corner vignette guy. I'll keep working on it.

Boulder Fall Festival 2011

I just returned from the Boulder Fall Festival on Pearl Street. What a fantastic gathering of artists and performers. Of course many of the interesting regulars were there as well.

Through the grace of God, I have been able to acquire a full version of Adobe Photoshop CS5 at an extreme discount. Along with the install came a complimentary install of onOne PhotoTools 2.5. I'm incredibly excited and forever grateful for these blessings. Keep watching this space for more...

Superior, Colorado July 4th in Black and White

Walked over to the Town of Superior Pancake Breakfast this morning. I just missed the parade but did see some of the wonderful floats parked at the breakfast. There were lots of vendors and things for the kids to do. Oh boy did those pancakes smell amazing.

I decided to take my camera on over and I set it to black and white. I've been wanting to use the black and white only setting for awhile. I miss the college days when that's all we had was black and white film (yes film). The images we captured, without the worry of color casts etc, were pretty great and very well composed. It felt good to forget the color today. I think I'll do it again soon.

Boulder Creek Festival 2011

My wife and I checked out the Boulder Creek Festival this year for the first time. It was a great atmosphere but got a bit hectic when the wind started toppling tents. Overall, we love hanging out in Boulder and can't wait for more summer events. Enjoy the images.

What to do with old photos?

Most printers have scanners built in these days. This is very handy for more than scanning that tax document or lease agreement. If you have old photos stored away in a box somewhere, why not get them out and scan them for digital storage or sharing on Facebook? Here's a tip, place more than one image on the scanner bed and scan them together. You can then later crop them individually apart in your editing software.

These guys did great, much better than my camera did in the darkness. I edited a few images quick. Excuse the black and white conversion. The lighting will take more editing time than I have tonight. I will revisit these images to see about pulling some concert style colors from them. In the meantime, enjoy!

Thank you to everyone who supported my wedding photography business. Unfortunately, times have changed and I no longer am registered as a business in Westminster, CO. I have relocated to Broomfield, CO and have not decided if I want to register here.

I do currently plan to do more personal projects and possibly look into a gallery showing in the future. If you are interested in owning some of the images posted on my blog, please contact me. If you must have me as your wedding photographer, shoot me an email and we can discuss it. I still love wedding photography and who knows, I might be available to donate my time.

I recently dusted off the portrait equipment and hauled it in to work. In addition to the normal corporate looking portraits, some of my coworkers had a little fun. I think he calls the first one "horse lips". The second has something to do with moving his face extremely fast. Good times.

Whenever I see a tree all alone on a hill side or even in a field, I like to grab a photo of it. I'm not sure why, I just do. I've taken to calling them 'lonely trees'.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not a landscape photographer. BUT, I do have a small passion for creating panoramic images. Seeing the Rocky Mountains everyday has sparked that passion again.

I ventured out today and grabbed a few images to stitch together. Below is the first one through the editing process. It's comprised of five images from my 12 mega-pixel DSLR. Photoshop was used for enhancement and stitching the images together. The detail in the original image is amazing.

I decided to use my time off and try to be creative. I grabbed an incredibly bad zoom lens (purchased off eBay) and headed to the public shopping area of Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, CO. I didn't get to many shots, mainly because there just wasn't much happening on this Wednesday in December. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of wonderful characters to talk to and take pictures of. It's just that the crowds were not thick enough for me to not get noticed. It's difficult to capture true moments when you stand out. Oh well, please enjoy.

This image is a gift for family. The photo was taken from their backyard back in 2007. I recently remembered it and thought it would be nice hanging on their wall. I might have gotten carried away with the size I ordered, 20 by 20. :) Hopefully they do not follow this blog?

Just over three years ago I was blessed to be chosen to take Jenny's senior pictures. The day was fun and Jenny was beautiful. She made my job easy. A few weeks later Jenny was taken from us. The images taken that day were possibly the last taken of Jenny. In my mind and heart, I believe I was apart of a miracle. The Lord saw fit to give us Jenny for those few extra days, just long enough for these images to be taken. Thank you Lord for Jenny. Thank you for giving us that day.
